Q. Where did Sarah go to school? What is her background?
A. Sarah has a B.A. in Visual Arts (a combination of Art History and Studio Arts) from The University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. In 1995 her passion for design and style and her flair for entertaining was recognized and she was approached to work as a prop stylist and set decorator for a lifestyle TV show on CTV. From there Sarah went on to pursue a number of different projects and juggled working with an interior designer, being the Set Designer and Stylist for Savoir Faire on HGTV, renovating a series of houses, creating a growing design business of her own, and appearing on many home and design based TV shows as a guest expert. After years of hard work in the field of lifestyle television and design Sarah co-created and co-produced Room Service for HGTV. After 94 episodes and 5 seasons of Room Service, Sarah decided it was time for a new challenge and design inc. was developed to provide a fresh, fun and fast-paced look at the behind-the-scenes world of Sarah’s design business.
Q. I am interested in pursuing a career in design – does Sarah have any advice for me about schools, etc.?
A. Design is an exciting and fast-paced career with lots to offer. It is demanding and challenging and requires creative vision, perseverance, great people skills, and tons of energy. If you are researching schools to attend you should make sure you inquire about the placement programs offered by the institution to help graduates find a job at the end of the program and put their skills to use. It is a highly competitive field and you’ll need all the help you can get to succeed. In addition to considering degree or certificate programs in decorating and design one of the best resources for education is books on the history of design, architecture and the decorative arts. A well-rounded designer needs to have a firm understanding of all aspects of design and a historical reference of the important periods of design through the ages. You may also want to investigate performing an internship with a professional designer in your area to get some hands-on knowledge about the business. Be sure to select a designer whose style you admire. And finally, keep in mind that design is a business, not a hobby. It’s fun to shop, but the majority of your time will be spent managing budgets, tradespeople and timelines on behalf of your clients. Attention to detail and great organizational skills are imperative for any successful designer.
Q. How can I get a VHS copy of an episode?
A. Please give us a call at 1-866-925-2500, or in the Toronto area 416-964-3500.
